Jeffrey Goldberg

Biography:

American journalist Jeffrey Mark Goldberg was born in 1965 and serves as The Atlantic’s chief editor. Goldberg gained recognition for his coverage of international politics during his nine years at The Atlantic prior to being appointed editor. Beginning in August 2023, he continued to serve as editor of The Atlantic while moderating the PBS program Washington Week, which was renamed Washington Week with The Atlantic. Jewish Goldberg left college early and briefly worked at The Washington Post. After that, he relocated to Israel and joined the Israel Defense Forces during the First Intifada as a prison guard at Ktzi’ot Prison, which housed Palestinian rebels who had been detained.

Goldberg described Rafiq Hijazi as “the only Palestinian I could find in Ketziot who understood the moral justification for Zionism.” Hijazi was a leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization, a math teacher at a college, and a devout Muslim from a camp for refugees in the Gaza Strip. Many years after his first trip to Israel as a 13-year-old, he became a dual Israeli citizen. Goldberg recalls how empowered he believed Israel to be. He stated that he had made the decision to renounce his Israeli citizenship in a 2013 interview with the Washingtonian, stating, “If Israel goes much further down the road I think it’s on and becomes more of a theocratic, totalitarian-style state how could the liberal-minded American Jew support that?”
