V. I. S. Jayapalan

Biography:

V. I. S. Jayapalan is a Sri Lankan-Tamil writer, political analyst, and actor, recognized for his roles in Tamil language films. His acting journey began with his debut in Vetrimaaran’s “Aadukalam” (2011), a performance that earned him a National Film Award.

Hailing from Uduvil, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, Jayapalan embarked on his writing career during the 1970s while pursuing studies at the University of Jaffna. His first anthology was published in 1986. Alongside his studies in Economics, he was actively involved in university activities and held leadership roles in the student union. The escalating Sri Lankan Civil War prompted his move to Oslo, Norway in 1988, where he gained Norwegian citizenship. While living in Norway, he maintained connections with Tamil Nadu, India, contributing to his artistic and literary pursuits. His literary excellence was acknowledged when he was honored as the best immigrant writer by the Norwegian Writers’ Association in 1995. His poetry found translation in English, Norwegian, and Sinhala. A collection of his poems, along with works by R. Cheran and Puthuvai Raththinathurai, was published in Canada in 2009 under the title ‘Wilting Laughter’.

Through his association with filmmaker Balu Mahendra, Jayapalan was introduced to Vetrimaaran, leading to his role in “Aadukalam” (2011). His portrayal of the cockfighting clan’s patriarch, Pettaikaran, earned praise from critics and audiences alike. His performance was described as a “revelation,” showcasing his adeptness at conveying the character’s nuances through expressions and body language. This remarkable performance led to a special jury award at the National Film Awards in 2011, in addition to nominations at the Filmfare and Vijay Awards.
