Gopi Sundar

Gopi Sundar C. S., born on 30 May 1977, is a multi-talented Indian artist known for his contributions to the music, film, and entertainment industries. His versatile career spans various roles, including music director, programmer, playback singer, songwriter, actor, and performer. Gopi Sundar has made significant impacts in the Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil film industries, and his journey is marked by numerous achievements and accolades.

Sundar’s musical journey began with composing music for television commercials, where he showcased his talent by crafting approximately 5,000 jingles. This early experience in the advertising world honed his composition skills and laid the foundation for his future successes.

As a keyboardist, Gopi Sundar collaborated with several prominent music directors, including the renowned composer duo Vishal-Shekhar, highlighting his versatility and adaptability as a musician.

His musical prowess led to the recognition of his outstanding soundtrack albums and film scores, earning him prestigious awards such as the National Film Award, Kerala State Film Award, and two Filmfare Awards South. These accolades solidified his position as a leading music director in the Indian film industry.

In 2014, Gopi Sundar launched his own recording label, the Gopi Sundar Music Company, with the mission of promoting aspiring musicians and facilitating low-budget productions. This endeavor showcased his commitment to nurturing talent within the industry.

Further expanding his creative horizons, Sundar formed a live performance music band named “Band Big G” in Dubai in 2016, demonstrating his passion for delivering engaging musical experiences beyond the studio.

In 2017, his remarkable work on the film “Pulimurugan” earned him a spot on the contender list for the 90th Academy Awards nominations in the Best Original Song and Best Original Score categories, although the final nominations eluded him.

Gopi Sundar’s early life was marked by his affinity for music, nurtured by his parents. Despite dropping out of school after failing his SSLC exams, his parents supported his musical aspirations. He initially pursued music classes at the Government Music College in Chennai but later discontinued the course due to disillusionment.

Sundar’s career took a significant turn when he joined the music troupe of renowned Malayalam composer Ouseppachan. Under Ouseppachan’s mentorship, he honed his skills as a tabla and keyboard player and gained recognition for his burgeoning composing talents.

During his initial struggles in Chennai, where he aimed to establish himself in the music industry, Gopi Sundar began composing jingles for television commercials. His uncle Devan, a prominent actor-politician in Malayalam cinema, provided him with crucial support during these challenging times. Sridhar Kariat, the son of legendary Malayalam filmmaker Ramu Kariat, guided him on navigating the competitive world of advertising.
