Glenn Close
Biography:
Glenn Close was born on March 19, 1947, in Greenwich, Connecticut, to Elizabeth Mary Hester “Bettine” Moore, a socialite, and Dr. William Taliaferro Close, who ran a clinic in the Belgian Congo and served as physician to dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. She grew up with two sisters, Tina and Jessie, and two brothers, Alexander (“Sandy”) and Tambu Misoki, the latter adopted during her family’s years in Congo.
Close spent her early childhood in a cottage on her grandfather’s Greenwich estate, where her love for acting first took root. Despite her privileged upbringing, she distanced herself from elite “WASP” society, even avoiding mention of her wealthy hometown to prevent being seen as entitled.
At age seven, her parents joined the Moral Re-Armament (MRA) movement, which Close later described as a “cult” that controlled every detail of their lives. She lived in communal centers and attended schools in Switzerland and at Rosemary Hall, graduating in 1965. She then toured with the singing group Up With People, forming her own ensemble, the Green Glenn Singers.
At 22, Close left the MRA, crediting her passion for acting for helping her break free. She studied theater and anthropology at The College of William & Mary, where she trained under Howard Scammon, performed in The Common Glory, and graduated with honors from Phi Beta Kappa. Inspired by Katharine Hepburn, she pursued acting professionally.
Through Finding Your Roots, Close later discovered distant family ties to Princess Diana, Clint Eastwood, and socialite Marjorie Post.
Her stage debut came in 1974 at age 27, leading to early roles in Great Performances (1975) and Broadway’s Rex (1976). By the late 1970s, she appeared in The Crucifer of Blood and Barnum, earning her first Tony Award nomination in 1980.
Close’s film breakthrough arrived with The World According to Garp (1982), earning her first Oscar nomination. Success followed with The Big Chill (1983), The Natural (1984), and Something About Amelia (1984), for which she won her first Tony Award (The Real Thing).
In 1987, her portrayal of Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction brought international fame and her fourth Oscar nomination. She followed this with the acclaimed Dangerous Liaisons (1988), earning another nomination and BAFTA nod.
The 1990s saw major performances in Reversal of Fortune (1990), Sarah, Plain and Tall (1991), Serving in Silence (1995)—which won her an Emmy—and her Tony-winning role in Sunset Boulevard (1993–94). Her iconic turn as Cruella de Vil in 101 Dalmatians (1996) cemented her status as a household name.
During the 2000s, Close balanced film and TV, starring in The Stepford Wives (2004), The Lion in Winter (2003), and the FX series The Shield (2005). Her lead role as Patty Hewes in Damages (2007–2012) earned her two Emmy Awards and critical acclaim.
In 2011, she co-wrote, produced, and starred in Albert Nobbs, exploring themes of gender identity—a passion project she pursued for two decades. The role earned her another Oscar nomination.
She returned to the stage in A Delicate Balance (2014) and reprised Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard (2016–2017), winning major theater honors.
In 2018, her performance in The Wife brought universal praise and multiple awards, including a Golden Globe, SAG Award, and her seventh Oscar nomination—making her the most-nominated actress without a win.
Recent screen work includes Hillbilly Elegy (2020), Four Good Days (2020), Swan Song (2021), and Tehran (2022). She continues to take on prominent roles in projects like The Deliverance (2024), Brothers (2024), and Back in Action (2025).
Upcoming appearances include Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025), Encores, and The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026). She will also headline the Channel 4 crime drama Maud in 2025.
Throughout her five-decade career, Glenn Close has built one of the most versatile and acclaimed acting legacies in film, television, and theatre history.
