G. M. Kumar is an Indian actor known for his roles in Tamil language films. He began his journey in the film industry as an assistant director to K. Bhagyaraj and worked with notable actors like Livingston and R.P. Vishwam in films such as “Kakki Sattai” and “Kanni Rasi.” Kumar was born in 1957 in Avadi and developed a passion for films at a young age.
Kumar made his directorial debut with the film “Aruvadai Naal” (1986), produced by Sivaji Productions and starring Prabhu. The film received positive reviews and opened doors for more opportunities. However, Kumar’s insistence on having Ilaiyaraaja as the music composer led to challenges, and some of his subsequent directorial ventures, like “Pickpocket” and “Uruvam,” faced commercial failure. His career took a different turn, and he made his acting debut as a villain in Bharathiraja’s “Captain Magal” (1992). He then took a break from acting to study anthropology and work on documentaries.
In the early 2000s, facing financial difficulties, Kumar returned to acting and played minor roles in films like “Ramchandra” and “Sivalingam IPS.” His breakthrough came when he was offered a role in Shankar’s production, “Veyil” (2006), which earned him critical acclaim. He later starred in Bala’s “Avan Ivan” and received a Vijay Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, with critics praising his riveting performance despite the film’s mixed reviews.
