Faran Haroon Tahir was born in Los Angeles to Naeem Tahir, a renowned actor and writer, and Yasmeen Tahir, one of Radio Pakistan’s most recognizable voices. On his maternal side, he is the grandson of celebrated writers Imtiaz Ali Taj and Hijab Imtiaz Ali, the latter also being the first Muslim woman pilot. His younger brothers also pursued careers in media—Ali Tahir became well known for his role in the sitcom Teen Bata Teen, while Mehran Tahir built his career as a TV producer with Hum TV. Though born in the U.S., Faran spent much of his early life in Pakistan before returning to America in 1980.
Initially a business economics student at the University of California, Berkeley, Tahir later shifted to theatre, earning a degree in drama and later completing an MFA at Harvard University’s American Repertory Theater Institute for Advanced Theater Training.
He made his film debut as Nathoo in Disney’s 1994 live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book. His subsequent credits include Picture Perfect (1997), Anywhere But Here (1999), Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), and the independent feature ABCD (1999), in which he played the male lead. In 2008, he gained recognition for portraying the antagonist Raza in Marvel’s Iron Man, followed by the role of Starfleet Captain Richard Robau in Star Trek (2009) and President Patel in Elysium (2013).
On television, Tahir has appeared in numerous series, including Alias, The Practice, The West Wing, Lost, NYPD Blue, 24, Monk, Chuck, Cold Case, Hawaii Five-0, and Warehouse 13. He also starred in the Sci-Fi Channel film Manticore (2005), guest-starred in Grey’s Anatomy as Isaac, and played the Egyptian god Osiris in Supernatural. Other roles include appearances in Dallas (revival), Supergirl as a military commander, and NCIS and its spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles.
In later years, he continued to diversify his roles, portraying Rhys Bashir in American Crime (2016), Captain Nemo in Once Upon a Time, and Mallick in Syfy’s 12 Monkeys (2017). On stage, he notably played the lead in Othello with the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., in 2016.
Beyond Hollywood, Tahir has engaged with audiences in Pakistan. He appeared in the web series Speak Your Heart with Samina Peerzada in 2019 and later joined a PakWheels vlog in 2024 with his Umro Ayyar co-star Ali Kazmi. Tahir is set to appear in the Pakistani fantasy-action film Umro Ayyar – A New Beginning, directed by Azfar Jafri and slated for worldwide release in 2024.
