C. Ashwini Dutt, also spelled Ashwini Dutt, is a prominent Indian film producer celebrated for his contributions to Telugu cinema. Born on September 15, 1950, he founded Vyjayanthi Movies in 1974, a colossal production house that has left an indelible mark on the Telugu film industry. Over a career spanning nearly five decades, Aswani Dutt has produced over 40 films, predominantly in Telugu, with a few ventures in Hindi and Tamil.
Known for his opulent and big-budget productions featuring renowned actors, Ashwini Dutt has established himself as a key player in the industry. Beyond his role as a film producer, he ventured into politics, contesting the Vijayawada Lok Sabha constituency in the 2004 General Elections as a Telugu Desam Party candidate.
Hailing from a well-to-do family in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Aswani Dutt’s journey in the film industry began as an executive producer for the black-and-white film “O Seetha Katha” in 1974. His close childhood friend Jandhyala, who later became a notable film director and screenwriter, accompanied him through their academic years and early filmmaking endeavors.
Ashwini Dutt’s daughters, Priyanka Dutt, Swapna Dutt, and Sravanthi Dutt, have also made significant contributions to the film industry. Priyanka Dutt, married to film director Nag Ashwin, directed the film “Yevade Subramanyam” (2015) under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner.
Vyjayanthi Movies, under Aswani Dutt’s leadership, has produced films featuring some of the biggest stars in Telugu cinema, including NTR, ANR, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, Mahesh Babu, Allu Arjun, Jr. NTR, and Ram Charan. The production house faced challenges with the film “Sakthi” in 2011 but made a triumphant return with the blockbuster “Mahanati” in 2018.
Ashwini Dutt recalls “Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari” (1990) as his favorite among the films he produced. He expressed his interest in exploring fantasy films with CGI and started a project titled “Bhooloka Veerudu,” but it was eventually shelved due to a lack of a proper storyline.
Despite encountering similarities in storylines with another film, Ashwini Dutt’s commitment to originality and quality filmmaking is evident. His remarkable journey continues, leaving an enduring legacy in the vibrant world of Telugu cinema.
