Bombay Jayashri Ramnath is a distinguished Indian Carnatic vocalist and musician celebrated for her mesmerizing renditions across various languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi in the realm of film music. Her lineage boasts a rich musical heritage, representing the fourth generation of musicians in her family.
Born in Calcutta, Jayashri’s musical journey commenced under the tutelage of her parents, Smt. Seethalakshmy Subramaniam and Shri. N. N. Subramaniam, before being honed by illustrious mentors such as Lalgudi Jayaraman, T. R. Balamani, and G. N. Dhandapani Iyer in Carnatic music and the Veena.
Her musical prowess extends beyond Carnatic music as she delved into Hindustani classical music under the guidance of K. Mahavir Jaipurwale and Ajay Pohankar. Jayashri holds a diploma in Indian music from the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Delhi.
Beyond her musical pursuits, Jayashri delved into Bharatanatyam under the mentorship of Guru K. Kalyanasundaram Pillai at the Shri Rajarajeshwari Bharatha Natya Kalamandir in Mumbai. She also engaged in theater through the Amateur Dramatic Club in Mumbai.
Educationally, Jayashri attended St. Anthony’s High School in Chembur and pursued a bachelor’s degree in commerce and economics from R. A. Podar College.
Recognized as a prominent figure in the Carnatic music landscape, Jayashri’s accolades include receiving the Padma Shri in 2021, India’s fourth highest civilian honor, and the esteemed Sangeetha Kalanidhi from the Madras Music Academy in December 2023. Her artistry and soulful renditions have made her one of the most sought-after and revered Carnatic musicians of her time.
