Bappi Lahiri, born Alokesh Aparesh Lahiri on November 27, 1952, was a celebrated Indian singer, composer, and record producer, affectionately known as Bappida. Renowned for popularizing synthesized disco music in the Indian music industry, he not only composed but also lent his voice to some of his iconic compositions. His fame surged notably in the 1980s and 1990s with his vibrant filmi soundtracks, extending his success to Bengali, Telugu, and Kannada cinema, and his musical influence continued well into the 21st century.
Hailing from a Bengali Brahmin family in Calcutta, Bappi Lahiri was raised by musical parents, Aparesh Lahiri and Bansuri Lahiri, both revered singers and musicians in classical music and Shyama Sangeet. As the only child in his family, he inherited a rich musical legacy, with ties to the esteemed Lahiri Mohan Family of Sirajganj in East Bengal (now Bangladesh). His lineage notably included his maternal uncle, the legendary singer Kishore Kumar.
Bappi’s musical journey commenced at a tender age of three when he began playing the tabla, receiving initial guidance from his talented parents. Displaying exceptional talent, he honed his skills under the tutelage of tabla maestro Samta Prasad, at the suggestion of none other than Lata Mangeshkar.
Fascinated by American musician Elvis Presley from his early years, Bappi drew inspiration from Presley’s style, particularly his penchant for adorning multiple gold chains and jewelry. Aspired to establish a distinctive image, Bappi created his signature “golden jewelry” look as a symbol of success, considering gold to be his lucky charm.
Bappi Lahiri’s musical prowess, deeply rooted in classical training yet intertwined with disco rhythms and synthesized sounds, revolutionized the Indian music scene. His dedication to his craft, innate talent, and unique style endeared him to audiences across generations, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Indian music and film.
