Ayilya Gopalakrishnan, known by her stage name Ananya, is an accomplished Indian actress renowned for her roles in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada films. Her multifaceted talents also encompass singing and archery.
Her debut into the acting realm took place with the Malayalam film “Positive” (2008), followed by her entry into Tamil cinema the subsequent year through “Naadodigal,” a movie that garnered both critical acclaim and commercial success. Ananya’s impressive achievements include the Kerala State Television Award for Best Actress in 2012 for her role in the telefilm “Doore” and the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Tamil for her performance in “Engaeyum Eppothum” in 2011.
Born as Ayilya to Malayali parents Gopalakrishnan Nair, a prominent film producer, and Praseetha in Perumbavoor, Kerala, she carries the moniker derived from her birth star Aslesha, called Ayilyam in Malayalam and Tamil. Her introduction to the entertainment industry occurred at a young age, as she appeared as a child artist in one of her father’s productions, “Pai Brothers” (1995). While pursuing a B.A. degree in Communicative English at St. Xavier’s College for Women, Aluva, Ananya showcased her archery skills and secured the State Championship title. Her journey into acting commenced during her participation in the television reality show “Star Wars,” leading to her discovery by directors and subsequent acting opportunities. Although initially hesitant, Ananya eventually embraced the chance to act in “Positive” after turning down five projects.
Transitioning to her Tamil debut film “Naadodigal,” her screen name was modified to Ananya. The movie achieved substantial commercial success, propelling her to fame and earning her recognition for her compelling performance. She reprised the same role in its Malayalam adaptation, “Ithu Nammude Katha.” A significant breakthrough in Malayalam cinema came with her role in “Shikkar” alongside Mohanlal, where her riveting scenes in the climax garnered praise from Mohanlal himself, who likened her to the “Vijayashanti” of Malayalam cinema. Ananya also took on a supporting role in “Kandahar,” sharing the screen with luminaries like Mohanlal and Amitabh Bachchan. Her 2011 appearance in “Engaeyum Eppothum” as one of the female leads garnered widespread acclaim and turned into a sleeper hit.
After a three-year hiatus from Tamil cinema, Ananya returned with “Pulivaal” in 2014. Her future projects include “Sigappu Rojakkal 2” in Tamil, “Intintaa Annamayya” in Telugu, and “Ameya” in Malayalam, although the release of the latter has been delayed. Ananya’s diverse talents and accomplished career have solidified her position as a respected figure in the Indian film industry.
