On April 14, 1888, August Adam was born in Pursruck, Upper Palatinate, Germany. Karl Adam, his elder brother, was a theologian and priest as well. August Adam studied under his brother at the University of Tübingen and Otto Schilling at the University of Freiburg before being ordained as a priest in the Diocese of Regensburg in 1911. His thesis, Arbeit und Besitz nach Ratherius von Verona (Work and Property after Ratherius of Verona), earned him a degree in 1924. For reasons that were never disclosed but probably having to do with his progressive beliefs, he was not allowed to obtain the credentials required to teach at the university level.
