Biography:

Rajkumar Santoshi is an acclaimed Indian film director, producer, and screenwriter, known for his significant contributions to Hindi cinema. Born in Chennai (then Madras) to producer-director P. L. Santoshi and his second wife, Rajkumar currently resides with his wife Manila and children, Ram and Tanisha.

Santoshi embarked on his cinematic journey in 1982 as an assistant director under Govind Nihalani, working on films like “Vijeta” (1982) and “Ardh Satya” (1983). His directorial debut came with the action drama “Ghayal” (1990), starring Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Seshadri. The film, revolving around the search for a missing brother, earned critical acclaim and commercial success. “Ghayal” not only ranked as the second highest-grossing Hindi film of the year but also garnered Santoshi the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Director, the Filmfare Award for Best Story, and the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Santoshi continued his success with the crime drama thriller “Damini” (1993), addressing bold themes related to the status of women in society. Starring Meenakshi Seshadri, Sunny Deol, Rishi Kapoor, and Amrish Puri, the film received universal critical acclaim and emerged as a major commercial success, ranking as the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. “Damini” secured Santoshi his second consecutive Filmfare Award for Best Director, a unique accomplishment in the industry.

His diverse portfolio includes the iconic comedy “Andaz Apna Apna” (1994), featuring Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. Despite initial box-office performance, the film attained cult status over time. Santoshi’s subsequent projects like “Barsaat” (1995) and the action drama “Ghatak: Lethal” (1996) further solidified his position as a director capable of delivering commercial successes.
