Karthik Subbaraj is a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, primarily known for his work as a director, writer, and producer, with a focus on Tamil cinema.
In his early life, Karthik pursued his education at SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School in Madurai. Later, he enrolled in Thiagarajar College of Engineering to study Mechatronics. During his college years, he actively participated in stage shows and skits, honing his passion for the performing arts. Notably, his father, Gajaraj, is an actor known for his supporting roles in films such as “Mundasupatti” and “Kabali.”
Karthik’s journey into filmmaking began with the creation of the short film “Kaatchipizhai” in Madurai, which garnered recognition and was selected for Nalaya Iyakunar, a notable platform for aspiring filmmakers.
While Karthik initially aimed to direct “Jigarthanda,” funding constraints led him to conceive the story for the low-budget film “Pizza,” notable for its introduction of the 7.1 sound system. “Pizza” achieved commercial success and was remade in several Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, and Kannada. This success paved the way for Karthik to eventually bring “Jigarthanda” to life, a film that garnered positive reviews and earned actor Bobby Simha a national award. The film also received praise from industry stalwarts like directors S. Shankar and Mani Ratnam.
Karthik continued to make a mark in the industry with his third film, “Iraivi” (2016), which received acclaim for its portrayal of societal treatment of women and the impact of men’s attitudes and behaviors on women’s lives. The film also served as a platform for Karthik to express the challenges he faced during the production of his second film, symbolized through the character of SJ Surya.
His directorial journey continued with “Mercury” (2018), a silent thriller starring Prabhu Deva in the lead role, although it did not achieve commercial success. He also ventured into producing content, including the web series “Kallachirippu” under his banner, Stone Bench.
In 2019, Karthik directed the action drama “Petta,” Rajinikanth’s 166th film, produced by Kalanithi Maran of Sun Pictures and featuring music by Anirudh Ravichander. This film marked Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s Tamil film debut. Concurrently, he produced the Amazon original movie “Penguin,” starring Keerthy Suresh. His involvement extended to producing the Hotstar Originals web series “Triples,” starring Jai and Vani Bhojan. He also directed Vikram in the film “Mahaan,” which premiered directly on Amazon Prime Video.
Karthik Subbaraj’s diverse contributions to the film industry also included directing the short film “Miracle” as part of the Amazon Anthology film “Putham Pudhu Kaalai” (2020).
