Biography:

Heera Rajagopal, a former Indian actress, has made her mark in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi language films. Her upbringing as a military child led her to attend schools in various states across India. She pursued a degree in psychology at Women’s Christian College, Chennai, during which she ventured into modeling for print magazines to gain financial independence. In her student days, Heera also worked briefly as an encyclopaedia-seller, a hotel employee, and a model coordinator. Initially, she was not inclined towards a career in films and turned down initial offers from film directors. Her first film offer came unexpectedly during a family holiday in Gulmarg, Kashmir, where she was approached to be Tina Munim’s body double. She also declined an offer from filmmaker Subhash Ghai, who had seen her during a modeling assignment.

In 1991, after completing college, Heera accepted the lead female role in Kathir’s Tamil romantic drama film “Idhayam.” Although initially hesitant, she was convinced by film producer T. G. Thyagarajan to pursue acting, citing the professionalism and determination of the film’s team. In “Idhayam,” she portrayed a medical student who remains oblivious to her classmate’s love for her. The film performed well at the box office and is now considered a “cult film” in Tamil cinema. Heera’s second film, “Nee Pathi Naan Pathi” (1991), directed by Vasanth and produced by Kavithalayaa Productions, followed. She then starred in four films alongside actor Sarathkumar in quick succession before taking on the role of a single mother in “Sabash Babu” (1993), written by T. Rajender.

Heera was cast by renowned director Mani Ratnam in his caper film “Thiruda Thiruda” (1993), where she played the role of a rural belle who becomes a thief on the run, alongside actors Prashanth and Anand. Her performance marked a significant departure from her previous sophisticated roles and was highly praised by critics. She made her Bollywood debut in Raj Sippy’s “Amanaat” (1994), co-starring Sanjay Dutt and Akshay Kumar. The film faced delays due to Dutt’s legal issues.

Throughout the mid-1990s, Heera continued to act in prominent Tamil productions, often sharing the screen with other leading actresses. Notably, she appeared in Balu Mahendra’s comedy drama “Sathi Leelavathi” (1995), co-starring Kamal Haasan, Ramesh Aravind, and Raja. She portrayed a corporate manager in Agathiyan’s “Kadhal Kottai” (1996), alongside Ajith Kumar and Devayani, which was a box office success and won several National Film Awards. Heera also featured in a supporting role opposite Kamal Haasan in K. S. Ravikumar’s comedy drama “Avvai Shanmugi” (1996).

In late 1999, Heera made the decision to exit the film industry, citing her desire to avoid succumbing to the pressures of accepting roles that did not align with her intellectual sensibilities.
