Anand Mohan Chaubey and Sheela Chaubey welcomed Abhishek Chaubey into the world in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. His early years and adolescence were spent in Ranchi, Patna, and Jamshedpur. He graduated with a degree in English literature from Hindu College in New Delhi in 1998 after completing his tenth grade education at St. Xavier’s School in Ranchi in 1993 and his twelfth grade education at Siva Sivani Public School in Hyderabad in 1995. After relocating to Mumbai, he enrolled in the Xavier Institute of Communications’ Film & Television Production program before diving headfirst into the Hindi film industry.
He started off as Vishal Bhardwaj’s co-writer and associate director for his first film, Makdee (2002). He later helped him with his next movies, most notably co-writing Vishal’s groundbreaking Omkara (2006) and Kaminey (2009).
The dark comedy Ishqiya (2010) and its follow-up Dedh Ishqiya (2014), both starring Naseeruddin Shah, were acclaimed as Abhishek’s directorial debuts. His next movie, Udta Punjab (2016), was well received by critics and focused on Punjab’s drug problem.
