House of the Dragon

Story:

George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal created the American fantasy drama television series House of the Dragon for HBO. It is the second TV show in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and a prelude to Game of Thrones (2011–2019). The story starts roughly 100 years after the Targaryen conquest unites the Seven Kingdoms, almost 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before Daenerys Targaryen is born. It is based in part on Martin’s 2018 book Fire & Blood. The program, which has an ensemble cast, depicts the events leading up to House Targaryen’s downfall and the catastrophic “Dance of the Dragons” conflict of succession.

In October 2019, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik were appointed showrunners for House of the Dragon, which was given a straight-to-series order. The first season of the show, which debuted on August 21, 2022, included 10 episodes. Five days after its debut, the show received a second season renewal. Condal was the only showrunner for the second season after Sapochnik left after the first. Eight episodes of the second season debuted on June 16, 2024. The third season of the show, which debuted on June 21, 2026, was renewed in June 2024 and is anticipated to have eight episodes. It is anticipated that the fourth and final season will be released in 2028.

Over 10 million people watched the first day of the House of the Dragon debut across all linear channels and HBO Max, making it the largest viewership in HBO’s history. Reviews of the series have been favorable. Emma D’Arcy received two nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, and it won a Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama. It received three British Academy Television Craft Awards and was nominated for nine Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series.
