We have a lot of influential and powerful politicians in the country, whom we vote to power every 5 years, by electing our state representatives, who will then represent us nationwide.
Many actors venture into politics at one point or the other in their lives. There are both successful and unsuccessful ones at that. While there are many examples that can be listed out, we need not look far away to find the best examples. Legendary actor NT Rama Rao became a politician, and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh shortly after starting his party. The same was the case with MGR and Jayalalithaa in Tamil Nadu, both of whom were successful actors and politicians as well, and the Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu. The fans of these actors translated into their vote base, making them win on a grand scale. These actors turned politicians paved the path for future actors to step into politics and try their luck.
However, after NTR, MGR and Jayalalithaa, there hasn’t been a single actor in the Telugu speaking states or in Tamil Nadu, who has been able to translate his/her fanbase into political victory. Megastar Chiranjeevi faced a major disappointment when he founded his Praja Rajyam party and failed to win in his own constituency. Post this disaster, Chiranjeevi has chosen to stay away from politics. Powerstar Pawan Kalyan, the Chief of Jana Sena, faced a similar situation when he wasn’t able to win in his own constituency. The situation in Tamil Nadu too is the same, with no actor being able to make their mark in politics. While this is clear that politicians now have more edge when compared to actors turned politicians, it is still to be seen if the magic of film stars as politicians is lost forever.
