Sunny Deol’s latest film Jaat, directed by Gopichand Malineni and produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, released last Thursday.
While the movie had a decent opening weekend, the collections weren’t enough to recover its high budget, which included big remunerations. Surprisingly, the producers announced a sequel, Jaat 2, just days after the release of the first part.
Reports suggest that Mythri had to mortgage the digital rights of their upcoming movies to manage Jaat’s release.
The film also lacked strong theatrical deals and was released on a distribution basis, which raised concerns about its financial performance. Sunny Deol, who reportedly charged a hefty fee for Jaat, is expected to demand even more for the sequel.
With the original film yet to break even, the decision to move ahead with Jaat 2 has shocked many in the industry. Whether this gamble pays off remains to be seen.
