TheatreTheyyam and folklore serve as the setting for Kishore’s eerie story in the Malayalam film Vadakkan. Recently released on Aha and OTTplay Premium, the movie follows paranormal investigator Raman and his research assistant Anna as they attempt to unravel the mystery of unexplained deaths on a secluded island. However, Raman kills Anna, doing the unimaginable. Let’s watch the movie again to see if Raman is really the malevolent figure that is hiding in Vadakkan. Be careful, there are spoilers ahead.
Touted as the first paranormal thriller in Malayalam, Vadakkan transports us to the isolated island of Brahmagiri in Kerala, where seven people were murdered during a reality TV production. Raman is joined by his research assistant Anna and his ex-girlfriend Megha, whose husband is one of the victims, as he travels to the creepy country, which is inhabited by myths and strange beings. The film, which was directed by Sajeed A., was written by Munnariyippu author Unni.
Researcher Ayisha (Maala Parvathy) tells Kishore about the spirit on the island of Brahmagiri. She tells him how the feudal lord killed Kunjumbu, a Theyyam musician, and how his spirit was imprisoned in the holy cove. In the latter scenes, the soul of the Kunjumbu takes control of Megha and attacks Anna. The spirit then takes over Raman, even though Raman restrains Megha. When Anna realizes this, she flees and ascends the tree home, but Raman pursues. In the following scene, we witness Anna’s death and the spirit departing Raman, who is not aware that he is the murderer.
Raman witnesses himself carrying out the murder on the CCTV when he gets back to the house. After that, he dons the traditional Theyyam clothing, lights the candles at the holy cove, and performs as a Theyyam performer. After releasing herself, Megha takes Raman with her and drives off from the island.
