TheatreStory:
The film Seven Samurai, released in 1954 and directed by Akira Kurosawa, tells an epic historical drama story set in Japan of the 16th century. The movie depicts an era of social instability and banditism in feudal Japan, as a poor village gets raided by a gang of bandits that are expected to return after the harvest and take crops from the villagers. Unable to pay samurai for protection due to lack of financial resources, the villagers are trying to hire seven samurai fighters who would be willing to protect them in exchange of food. Kamon Shimada, played by Takashi Shimura, is a compassionate and experienced samurai who leads seven samurai.
While the samurai train the villagers to defend themselves from an upcoming raid, the movie turns into an exploration of themes of courage, sacrifice, class struggle, loyalty, and transformation of the samurai. The complicated relations between the warriors and the farmers become more and more intricate as these two groups face their distrust and reliance on one another. Eventually, the film ends up in a long and dramatic battle conducted under the pouring rain, which demonstrates innovative techniques of action sequences used by Kurosawa. The movie is one of the best films ever made and had a great influence on world cinematography.
