TheatreAashiqui 2 is a Hindi-language romantic musical drama directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mukesh Bhatt, Bhushan Kumar, and Krishan Kumar under the banners of Vishesh Films and T-Series Films, with Mahesh Bhatt as the presenter. The film serves as a spiritual successor to the 1990 musical “Aashiqui” and is an adaptation of both the 1937 original and the 1976 remake of the American classic A Star is Born.
It stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor in the lead roles, with Shaad Randhawa and Mahesh Thakur in supporting roles, and a cameo appearance by Salil Acharya. The Soundtrack album was composed by Jeet Gannguli, Mithoon and Ankit Tiwari. The album is often regarded as one of the best of the decade.
Set in the early 2010s, Aashiqui 2 centers on the tumultuous romance between Rahul Jaykar, a struggling singer, and Aarohi Keshav Shirke, an aspiring singer who becomes his protege. Their relationship is strained by Rahul’s alcohol abuse and volatile temperament. Production commenced in 2011 with principal photography in Cape Town, Goa, and Mumbai on a budget of ₹18 crore.
Released on April 26, 2013 in India, Aashiqui 2 became a commercial hit, emerging as one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2013 with earnings over ₹109 crore. This success marked a turning point in the careers of both Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor. It became the highest-grossing film for the Bhatt brothers and the Vishesh Films banner. Aashiqui 2 was later remade in Telugu as “Nee Jathaga Nenundali.”
