Aditya Roy Kapur, born on November 16, 1985, is an Indian actor primarily active in the Hindi film industry. He began his career as a video jockey (VJ) and transitioned into acting in 2009 with his role in the drama film “London Dreams.” Kapur achieved his first major commercial success with the musical romance “Aashiqui 2” in 2013. In the same year, the romantic comedy “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” became his highest-grossing film, earning him the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Born in Mumbai to a Punjabi Hindu father, Kumud Roy Kapur, and a Jewish mother, Salome Aaron, Aditya Roy Kapur comes from a family with a background in the film industry. His grandfather, Raghupat Roy Kapur, was a film producer in the early 1940s. Kapur is the youngest of three siblings, with his eldest brother, Siddharth Roy Kapur, serving as the former CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and married to actress Vidya Balan. His second elder brother, Kunaal Roy Kapur, is also an actor.
His maternal grandparents, Sam and Ruby Aaron, were accomplished dance teachers who introduced the Sama dance to India. Kapur attended G. D. Somani Memorial School in Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, where his mother directed school plays. After a brief enrollment in St. Xavier’s College in Class XI, he graduated from St. Xavier’s College affiliated with the University of Mumbai. Although he initially aspired to be a cricketer during his school years, he eventually abandoned cricket coaching classes after the sixth standard.
Kapur’s career began as a VJ on the music channel Channel V India, where he gained recognition for his comic timing and unique hosting style. He appeared in shows like “Pakao” and co-hosted “India’s Hottest” with VJ Bruna Abdullah until 2008.
In the realm of Hindi films, Kapur made his debut with a supporting role in the 2009 musical drama “London Dreams,” alongside Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Asin Thottumkal. He continued to take on supporting roles in 2010, featuring in films like “Action Replayy” with Akshay Kumar and “Guzaarish” alongside Hrithik Roshan. While these films didn’t fare well at the box office, they established Kapur as a notable actor.
Following a period of career setbacks marked by critical and commercial disappointments such as “Daawat-e-Ishq” (2014), “Fitoor” (2016), “Ok Jaanu” (2017), and “Kalank” (2019), Kapur made a comeback with roles in the thriller “Malang” (2020), the black comedy “Ludo” (2020), and the thriller series “The Night Manager” (2023).
Beyond his acting career, Kapur is an avid football enthusiast and actively supports charitable causes and organizations. He has frequently participated in charity football matches and contributed to the “Pillars Of Humanity” initiative by the Ankibai Ghamandiram Gowani Trust.
Kapur has also made efforts towards environmental conservation, including the planting of 150 trees alongside Pragya Kapoor. Additionally, he took part in the “Dream Team” tour in the United States in August 2016, performing in various cities alongside celebrities such as Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan, Sidharth Malhotra, Parineeti Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Alia Bhatt, and Badshah.
