Kottukkaali

Story:

P. S. Vinothraj is the director and SK Productions is the producer of the 2024 Indian Tamil-language film Kottukkaali, which translates to “The Adamant Girl.” Starring Soori and Anna Ben (in her Tamil debut), the film centers on Meena, who falls in love with a man from a lower caste, but her family believes she is possessed and breaks the spell.

The movie was presented on February 16, 2024, after being chosen for the Forum section of the 74th Berlin International Film Festival. Reviews were from mediocre to poor when it was released on August 23, 2024.

Plot

After a number of years, Meena’s maternal uncle Paandi arrives from overseas with plans to wed her. Meena’s family believes that a spell is responsible for her unwavering affection for a lad from a caste that is oppressed.

Along with his parents, family, and friends, Paandi sets out to seek advice from a seer in order to exorcise this supposed influence. They visit their family god to carry out rites before to visiting the seer.

They encounter a number of difficulties on the way, such as Rani’s menstrual cramps, Karthi’s need to use the lavatory, and a broken autorickshaw. They also see a procession for a puberty ritual, which makes Paandi think of his earlier attempts. Paandi becomes enraged and beats Meena for humming a tune. He snaps at his family members, including Meena’s father, Murugan, and mother, Shanti, as well as the car driver, Suresh. He even hits his father. He later apologizes to Murugan, though.

Following the group, Siva and Mani take a detour to a wine shop where they talk about Meena’s faithfulness and conjecture that she may be pregnant, which they think explains her strong desire to wed the boy she loves. When a bull comes across their path, a small girl leads it away, claiming it is her only friend. The sacrificed rooster makes an unsuccessful attempt to flee. Meena sees a vision of herself with her hair unfastened and strolling freely.

Arriving at the seer’s home in Palamedu, Paandi witnesses another girl Meena’s age being cured of a spell that had rendered her infertile. By blowing air into the girl’s mouth and massaging her neck and navel, the seer purports to have taken out little voodoo balls and released her from the enchantment. Unable to watch this happen, Paandi flees the area and reluctantly returns when summoned. With the words, “The end of this journey is in your hands,” the screen goes black.
