William Holden

Biography:

“William Holden was an outstanding American actor and one of the most popular Hollywood stars in its Golden Age period. He was born on April 17, 1918, in O’Fallon, Illinois, and started his film career in the 1930s. He became famous as the star of the Golden Boy (1939). William Holden became a big star starring in movies such as Sunset Boulevard (1950), Sabrina (1954), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), and The Wild Bunch (1969).

He is known as an actor with a special style of understatement and charming screen presence playing always very strong, but complicated characters.William Holden got the nomination for an Academy Award for his portrayal of a struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis in the movie by Billy Wilder – Sunset Boulevard (1950), which is considered one of his best roles. After that he got the Academy Award for Best Actor for his character as Sgt. J.J. Sefton in Stalag 17 (1953).

Later he starred in such great movies as The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Wild Bunch, The Towering Inferno (1974), and Network (1976). He had three nominations for Academy Awards in his career and got a Primetime Emmy Award too. He worked in films until the early 1980s and died on November 12, 1981, in Santa Monica, California, aged 63.”
