Biography:

Vijay Vasanth, born Vijayakumar Vasanthakumar on May 20, 1983, is a prominent Indian politician who serves as a Member of Parliament representing the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency. His political journey gained momentum when he successfully contested and won the by-election held for the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat in May 2021. In addition to his political career, Vijay Vasanth is also recognized for his contributions to the Tamil film industry as an actor. He is the son of the late politician and entrepreneur H. Vasanthakumar and currently holds the position of Managing Director at Vasanth & Co, balancing his business responsibilities with his political commitments. His entry into politics came in 2021, following his father’s passing, where he assumed the role of General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.

In the realm of politics, Vijay Vasanth’s journey began after the unfortunate demise of his father, who was the sitting Member of Parliament for the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha constituency in 2020 due to Covid-19. Prior to this, he had been actively involved in assisting his father with constituency-related matters and played a significant role in his father’s successful election to Parliament. In 2021, Vijay Vasanth was appointed as the General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee. Later, when by-elections for the Kanyakumari constituency were announced in May 2021, the Congress party nominated him as their candidate. He faced off against veteran politician Pon. Radhakrishnan of the BJP, a former Union minister, and emerged victorious with a substantial margin of 1.34 lakh votes.

In the world of cinema, Vijay Vasanth made his debut in the highly acclaimed sports film “Chennai 600028” (2007), directed by Venkat Prabhu, where he portrayed a supporting role as a member of the Sharks cricket team. His success in this film led to further opportunities in movies such as “Thozha” and a guest appearance in Venkat Prabhu’s “Saroja.” He gained widespread recognition for his leading role in Samuthirakani’s “Naadodigal,” which achieved both commercial and critical acclaim. Additionally, he played a supporting role in the romantic film “Kanimozhi” (2010) and made a cameo appearance in the film “Velaikkaran” (2017).

Vijay Vasanth is also deeply involved in his family’s business, Vasanth & Co, which was established by his father in 1978. With an extensive network of over 96 stores across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Bengaluru, the chain specializes in consumer electronics and home appliances, making it a household name in Tamil Nadu. In 2018, the company achieved a turnover of over Rs 4,000 crore, and Vijay Vasanth currently serves as its Managing Director.

On a personal note, Vijay Vasanth got married in the year 2010. Additionally, he shares a familial connection with Tamilisai Soundararajan, who is his paternal cousin and currently serves as the Governor of Telangana state.
