Tony Kakkar, born on April 9, 1984, is an Indian singer known for his presence in the music industry, particularly recognized for his contributions to what’s been labeled as “cringe pop.” He stepped into Bollywood as a music director in 2012 with the film Mr. Bhatti on Chutti, where he composed the song “Good Boys Bad Boys.” Tony is notably the sibling of singers Sonu Kakkar and Neha Kakkar, all three making their mark in the music world.
Originally from Rishikesh, his family relocated to Delhi in the 1990s, where the Kakkar siblings began showcasing their musical talents at jagratas. In 2004, Tony and Neha moved to Mumbai, where Tony delved into learning the technical aspects of music composition. During his Mumbai stint, he ventured into lyricism, working with composer Sandeep Chowta and composing the song “Sawan Aaya Hai” for the film Creature 3D. In 2015, he co-founded the record label Desi Music Factory alongside Anshul Garg, aiming to nurture talent in the music industry.
Despite his musical achievements, Tony Kakkar has faced criticism for alleged plagiarism and similarities in visuals with K-pop songs. Instances like the release of “Shona Shona” in 2020 drew comparisons to B1A4’s “Like A Movie” and IZ*ONE’s “Beware,” with accusations of similarities in visuals. Similarly, the music video for “Booty Shake” in 2021 faced allegations of resemblance to K-pop group Blackpink’s “Ice Cream.”
Tony Kakkar’s journey in the music world is characterized not only by his contributions as a singer and music director but also by controversies concerning alleged similarities in his music videos to those in the K-pop industry.
