Thomas Baptist Morello (born May 30, 1964) is an American guitarist, singer, songwriter, and activist. He rose to fame as a founding member of Rage Against the Machine and later joined Audioslave. From 2016 to 2019, he performed with the supergroup Prophets of Rage, and he has also toured with Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. As a solo artist, he records under the name The Nightwatchman and collaborated with Boots Riley to form Street Sweeper Social Club. Morello also co-founded Axis of Justice, a political organization that runs a program on Los Angeles radio station KPFK.
Born in Harlem and raised in Libertyville, Illinois, Morello developed an interest in both politics and music during high school. He went on to study at Harvard University, graduating in 1986 with a degree in social studies. After his earlier band Lock Up broke up, he teamed with vocalist Zack de la Rocha to form Rage Against the Machine, one of the most influential metal bands of the 1990s. Known for his unconventional use of guitar effects, feedback, and tapping, Morello built a signature style that set him apart in rock music. He is also recognized for his outspoken socialist politics, often expressed through his solo project The Nightwatchman. In 2023, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Rage Against the Machine, and Rolling Stone ranked him among the top 20 greatest guitarists of all time.
Morello was raised by his mother, Mary Morello, a teacher of Italian and Irish descent who traveled internationally as an English instructor. His father, Ngethe Njoroge, was a Kenyan diplomat who served as his country’s first UN ambassador and had ties to significant Kenyan leaders, including Jomo Kenyatta. His parents separated when Tom was very young, and he was brought up in Illinois by his mother.
A politically active student, Morello described himself as “the only anarchist in a conservative high school” and often voiced radical views through writing and mock campaigns. At Harvard, he balanced academics with music, playing in bands such as Bored of Education (with future Nobel laureate Carolyn Bertozzi on keyboards). After college, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked odd jobs—including briefly as an exotic dancer—while pursuing music.
He began playing guitar seriously as a teenager, inspired by artists like Tony Iommi, Randy Rhoads, Run-D.M.C., and Jam Master Jay, blending heavy metal with hip-hop and punk influences. His first band, Nebula, played covers, and later he formed Electric Sheep, featuring Adam Jones (future guitarist of Tool). Morello’s unique playing style and politically charged songwriting became central to Rage Against the Machine’s success after they signed with Epic Records in 1992. The band released four albums—Rage Against the Machine (1992), Evil Empire (1996), The Battle of Los Angeles (1999), and Renegades (2000)—and gained a reputation for politically explosive performances, including a protest concert at the 2000 Democratic National Convention.
After Rage’s breakup in 2000, Morello, Brad Wilk, and Tim Commerford joined forces with Chris Cornell to form Audioslave, releasing three albums and performing internationally, including a historic show in Cuba. Rage later reunited in 2007 for Coachella and continued to tour intermittently until 2022, when frontman Zack de la Rocha suffered an injury that led to the cancellation of future shows. In 2024, it was announced the band would no longer tour.
Beyond his band work, Morello has ventured into other media. He has appeared in films (Iron Man, Star Trek: Insurrection, Made), documentaries (Sounds Like a Revolution, Flight 666), and wrote a 12-issue comic series, Orchid, for Dark Horse Comics. He has published political writings, including the foreword to The Big Red Songbook (2016), and in 2021 began a regular newsletter for The New York Times.
