Tom Hiddleston
Biography:
Thomas William Hiddleston, born on February 9, 1981, in Westminster, London, is the son of Diana Patricia (née Servaes), an arts administrator and former stage manager from Suffolk, and Dr. James Norman Hiddleston, a physical chemist from Greenock, Scotland, who later served as managing director of a biotechnology company affiliated with Oxford University. He has two sisters: Sarah, a journalist based in Chennai, India, and Emma, an actress and midwife.
Hiddleston’s family background is rich in history. On his mother’s side, he descends from Vice Admiral Reginald Servaes and Sir Edmund Vestey, a food magnate. His paternal grandfather, Alexander, worked in the shipyards and served in the Royal Artillery. He was also named after his great-great-uncle Tom Hiddleston, a soldier who died in World War I and whose name is inscribed on the Broomhill war memorial.
Raised in Wimbledon before moving near Oxford, Hiddleston attended boarding school at Windlesham House at seven and later the Dragon School. His parents separated when he was twelve. He went on to Eton College at thirteen and later to Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he graduated with double first-class honors in Classics. While at Cambridge, he was discovered by a talent agent during a student production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He further honed his craft at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), graduating in 2005 with a degree in acting.
During his student years, Hiddleston began working in television, appearing in Nicholas Nickleby (2001), the BBC/HBO drama Conspiracy (2001), and as Randolph Churchill in The Gathering Storm (2002). His first film role came in Joanna Hogg’s Unrelated (2006), followed by leading roles in stage productions such as The Changeling (2006) and Cymbeline (2007), the latter earning him an Olivier Award. On stage, he also played Cassio in Othello (2008) and Lvov in Ivanov (2008).
Hiddleston’s career expanded with diverse roles: narrating documentaries, voicing audiobooks, starring in Hogg’s Archipelago (2010), and appearing in series like Wallander, Miss Austen Regrets, and Return to Cranford. His breakthrough came when Kenneth Branagh cast him as Loki in Marvel’s Thor (2011), a role he originally auditioned for as Thor but was ultimately recast as the god of mischief. The performance earned him widespread recognition, with Empire magazine ranking Loki among the greatest film characters of all time.
From there, Hiddleston took on a mix of film and stage projects. He portrayed F. Scott Fitzgerald in Midnight in Paris (2011), appeared in War Horse and The Deep Blue Sea the same year, and reprised Loki in The Avengers (2012) and subsequent Marvel films. His stage performances included Coriolanus (2013–14), while his film credits ranged from Crimson Peak (2015) and High-Rise (2015) to I Saw the Light (2015), where he played country legend Hank Williams. He also starred in The Night Manager (2016), winning a Golden Globe, and headlined Kong: Skull Island (2017).
In later years, he continued to balance stage, television, and film. He played Hamlet in a 2017 Kenneth Branagh-directed production, narrated Apple TV+ nature series (Earth At Night in Color, Big Beasts, Earthsounds), reprised Loki in Marvel’s Loki (2021–2023), and starred in The Essex Serpent (2022). In 2024, he appeared in The Life of Chuck, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the People’s Choice Award. In 2025, he starred as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, setting box office records.
Hiddleston is regarded as one of Britain’s most prominent contemporary actors, earning a place on Debrett’s list of influential people (2017) and serving as the British Film Institute’s founding ambassador. Critics and collaborators have praised his intelligence, range, and natural affinity for Shakespeare.
Off-screen, Hiddleston lives in Belsize Park, London. He has been in a relationship with actress and writer Zawe Ashton since 2019, with whom he has a daughter born in 2022 and another child on the way in 2025. He previously dated actress Susannah Fielding and briefly singer Taylor Swift in 2016.
