On November 15, 1945, S. Chandrasekaran was born in Tamil Nadu, a state in southern India.Under the direction of S. Swaminathan, he completed his undergraduate studies at Madras University’s Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda College, where he also earned his master’s and graduate degrees. In 1972, he earned his PhD from the same institution. Oxy-Cope rearrangement and the synthesis of new norbornane derivatives served as the foundation for his thesis.[2] After relocating to the United States, he completed his post-doctoral research at Harvard University in the lab of E.J. Corey from 1973 to 1975. After completing his studies, he worked as a scientist at Syntex Research Laboratories from 1975 to 1976.
After continuing his research at Corey’s lab for another year in the US, he returned to India in 1977 to take a position as a chemistry lecturer at IIT Kanpur. He served there for 12 years before moving to Bengaluru to continue his work at the Indian Institute of Science. He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science at IISc in addition to being the chair of the Division of Chemical Sciences and the Department of Organic Chemistry. Chandrasekaran is an honorary professor at the Indian Institute of Science and resides in Bengaluru.
