Simon Curtis is an English producer and director who was born on March 11, 1960. He has experience in film, television, and theatre. The world premiere of Road, A Lie of the Mind, Roots, Dinner with Friends, and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice are among the theatre productions Curtis has worked on. In 2010, he directed Serenading Louie at the Donmar Warehouse. Curtis started his career working at the Royal Court Theatre.
Curtis directed episodes of the HBO comedy series Tracey Takes On… in 1996. In 2005, he also directed BBC Four’s three-part drama Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sky. The 20,000 Streets Under the Sky books by Patrick Hamilton are adapted into a serial.
In 2007, he oversaw the BBC’s version of Elizabeth Gaskell’s Cranford. Curtis helmed two additional Cranford episodes for the Christmas season in June 2009. The episodes, titled Return to Cranford, debuted on December 20, 2009. Curtis directed the BBC’s one-time television drama A Short Stay in Switzerland in August 2008, Dr. Anne Turner, who chose to commit suicide at a Dignitas clinic in 2006, was the real-life subject of the drama starring Julie Walters. A Short Stay in Switzerland was nominated for Best Single Drama at the Royal Television Society Awards and the British Academy Television Awards.
