Shubha Mudgal, born in 1959, is an eminent Indian musician, composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist recognized for her significant contributions to Hindustani classical music, Indian pop, and Tamil cinema. Her versatile repertoire encompasses genres like khyal, thumri, and dadra. In acknowledgment of her outstanding achievements, she was honored with the Padma Shri in the year 2000.
Born into an academic family in Allahabad, Shubha’s parents, Skand Gupta and Jaya Gupta, were both professors of English literature at Allahabad University, with a profound interest in Hindustani classical music and kathak. Her upbringing was surrounded by an environment that fostered artistic inclinations. Shubha’s early exposure to music and dance laid the foundation for her future endeavors.
After completing her schooling at St. Mary’s Convent Inter College in Allahabad, Shubha Mudgal initially delved into kathak dance but later shifted her focus to Hindustani classical music. Her first guru in the classical tradition was Ramashreya Jha in Allahabad. Subsequently, she moved to New Delhi for her undergraduate studies at Delhi University, where she continued her musical education under the guidance of Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, the founder of Gandharva Mahavidyalaya.
Shubha Mudgal’s journey as a performing artist began in the 1980s when she emerged as a talented Hindustani classical singer. In the subsequent decades, she explored various musical forms, including pop and fusion, showcasing her versatility and a willingness to experiment. Her dedication to music extended beyond performances, as she briefly operated a website called raagsangeet.com for Indian classical music enthusiasts.
Apart from her classical pursuits, Shubha Mudgal lent her voice to the title track of Star Plus’s serial “Diya Aur Baati Hum,” collaborating with Kailash Kher. She also contributed to the soundtrack of the film “Mystic India.”
In 2019, Shubha Mudgal added the role of a fictional writer to her diverse portfolio with her debut book titled “Looking for Miss Sargam: Stories of Music and Misadventure.”
In her personal life, Shubha Mudgal was initially married to Mukul Mudgal, the son of her guru Vinay Chandra Maudgalya. The marriage produced a son named Dhaval Mudgal, who became the lead singer of the Delhi-based band Half Step Down. Subsequently, Shubha Mudgal married tabla maestro Aneesh Pradhan.
