Sendhil Ramamurthy’s mother is a Tamil from the Pillai community, and his father is a Kannadiga. His Hindu family immigrated to Chicago when he was born. Growing up, he spoke a little Kannada and English. Both of his parents work as doctors. He has a sister who works as a doctor. He grew up in San Antonio, as did his sister. After attending Keystone School there, he graduated in 1991.
To follow in his parents’ footsteps, Ramamurthy first enrolled at Tufts University as a pre-med major. He belonged to Theta Delta Chi’s Kappa Charge as well. It was in his junior year, as a graduation requirement, that he took a “Intro to Acting” class that sparked his interest in acting. He decided to alter his career aspirations after taking part in multiple plays, such as Our Country’s Good.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in history, he enrolled in the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London in 1996, where he eventually graduated in 1998. Ramamurthy has acted in stage shows at the Manhattan Theatre Club’s East Is East, the Soho Repertory Theatre’s Indian Ink, and the West End’s A Servant of Two Masters.
His filmography includes Shor in the City, Little India, Orient Express, Blind Dating, Love & Debate (originally titled Thanks to Gravity), and Gurinder Chadha’s comedy It’s a Wonderful Afterlife. Furthermore, he has made appearances on a number of television programs, such as Numb3rs, Heroes, CSI: Miami, Ellen, Casualty, Guiding Light, Grey’s Anatomy, and Ultimate Force.
Despite being offered roles that would typically fit the stereotype of an Indian, he deliberately chose not to audition for them. The largest role Ramamurthy has played to date was on Heroes. Mohinder Suresh’s screen test and audition tape convinced the writers to rewrite the role for Ramamurthy, even though the original script called for a 55-year-old.
Hero’s Ramamurthy starred in all four seasons, despite making a brief cameo in the last one. He would not have returned for a fifth season if the show had been recommissioned He played the part of Adam in the television biblical miniseries In the Beginning on NBC in 2000. In Psych’s “Bollywood Homicide” episode from season four, which was helmed by his cousin Jay Chandrasekhar, Ramamurthy made a cameo appearance.
After the second episode, Ramamurthy appeared on the USA Network series Covert Affairs as Jai Wilcox, taking over for Eric Lively’s character Conrad Sheehan III. July 2010 saw the debut of the program. His character was killed off in the season three premiere. In the eighth and ninth seasons of The Office, Ramamurthy made an appearance as Ravi, Kelly Kapoor’s new boyfriend.
He was cast as assistant district attorney Gabriel Lowen in the CW series Beauty & the Beast, it was announced on December 19, 2012. In 2015 and 2016, he portrayed his character Heroes in the Heroes Reborn television series. In the sixth season of The Flash, he made an appearance as the primary antagonist, Dr. Ramsey Rosso/Bloodwork.
The ninth season episode “It’s My Party and I’ll Die If I Want To” featured him reprising his role.In 2020, he debuted as the father of the main character, Mohan Vishwakumar, on the Netflix series Never Have I Ever. Producing the show is Mindy Kaling, who previously collaborated with Ramamurthy as an actor and writer on The Office. In 2022, Ramamurthy made an appearance as Mister 104 in the fourth season of Doom Patrol.
