Seema Biswas, born on January 14, 1965, is an esteemed Indian actress renowned for her work in Hindi cinema and theatre. She rose to fame for her portrayal of Phoolan Devi in Shekhar Kapur’s acclaimed film “Bandit Queen” (1994), earning her the National Film Award for Best Actress. Notably, she also received the 2000 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the 2006 Best Actress Genie Award for her role as Shakuntala in Deepa Mehta’s “Water” (2005). Biswas has showcased her talent in various mainstream films including “Khamoshi: The Musical” (1996), “Bhoot” (2003), “Vivah” (2006), and “Half Girlfriend” (2017), among others. Additionally, she has made appearances in numerous television shows.
Born in Nalbari, Assam, to Jagdish Biswas and Meera Biswas, she pursued her education in political science at Nalbari College, Assam, before studying dramatic arts at the prestigious National School of Drama in New Delhi.
Biswas’s acting journey began with her lead role in Krishnan Kartha’s “Amshini” (Hindi), which entered the Indian Panorama Section of Filmotsav 1988. However, she gained widespread recognition after Shekhar Kapur discovered her talent while she performed with the NSD Repertory Company and offered her a role in “Bandit Queen.” Despite having prior experience in Assamese cinema, this opportunity marked her significant entry into Hindi cinema.
Throughout her career, Biswas has displayed her versatility and refusal to be typecast, portraying a diverse range of characters in films across various languages, including Marathi, Malayalam, and Tamil. She has received accolades for her performances and has been recognized with prestigious honors, such as the Life Membership of the International Film And Television Club of Asian Academy Of Film & Television by director Sandeep Marwah. Additionally, in 2014, Biswas served as a jury member at the 45th International Film Festival of India held in Goa from November 20 to 30.
