Samuel Pack Elliott was born on August 9, 1944, at Sutter Memorial Hospital in Sacramento, California. His mother, Glynn Mamie (née Sparks), had been a Texas state diving champion in high school and later worked as a physical-training instructor and teacher, while his father, Henry Nelson Elliott, was employed as a predator-control specialist with the U.S. Department of the Interior. Both parents were originally from El Paso, Texas, and Elliott’s ancestry includes a surgeon who served in the Battle of San Jacinto. At age 13, his family moved from California to Portland, Oregon.
He grew up in northeast Portland and graduated from David Douglas High School in 1962. Elliott initially studied English and psychology at the University of Oregon but left after two terms. He later attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, where he completed a two-year program and was cast as Big Jule in Guys and Dolls. A local newspaper encouraged him to pursue acting professionally. After his father’s death from a heart attack, Elliott again dropped out of the University of Oregon, where he had briefly re-enrolled.
In the late 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting despite his father’s warnings that a Hollywood career was unlikely. While training as an actor, he supported himself with construction jobs and served in the California Air National Guard’s 146th Airlift Wing.
Elliott began his career with guest roles on television. His first credit came in 1969 on Judd for the Defense, followed by appearances on Lancer and Mission: Impossible. That same year he had a small role in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). In the early 1970s, he gained visibility as a cowboy in Falstaff Beer commercials, and in 1975 he landed his first lead role in the TV movie I Will Fight No More Forever. His breakthrough came the following year with the feature film Lifeguard (1976). He went on to star in the miniseries Once an Eagle (1976–77) and appeared in Aspen (1977), Murder in Texas (1981), and A Death in California (1985).
In the 1980s and 1990s, Elliott became known for his rugged persona in films and TV. He co-starred with Tom Selleck in The Sacketts (1979) and The Shadow Riders (1982), played opposite Cher in Mask (1985), and appeared in Prancer (1989). He portrayed Sam Houston in Gone to Texas (1986), Wade Garrett in Road House (1989), and starred with his wife Katharine Ross in Conagher (1991), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. He later portrayed Brigadier General John Buford in Gettysburg (1993), Virgil Earp in Tombstone (1993), and provided the narration as The Stranger in The Big Lebowski (1998).
His later film work included roles in We Were Soldiers (2002), Hulk (2003), Thank You for Smoking (2005), Ghost Rider (2007), The Golden Compass (2007), and Up in the Air (2009). He also provided voices for animated projects including Barnyard (2006), Marmaduke (2010), and The Good Dinosaur (2015). On television, he appeared in Buffalo Girls (1995), Justified (2015), Grace and Frankie (2016), and starred as a series regular on Netflix’s The Ranch (2016–2020).
In 2017, Elliott received acclaim for The Hero, in which he played an aging Western star. The following year, he appeared in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born (2018) as Bobby Maine, earning his first Academy Award nomination, along with Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice nominations, and winning the National Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Most recently, Elliott starred as Shea Brennan in the Paramount+ miniseries 1883 (2021–2022), a prequel to Yellowstone. His performance earned him the SAG Award for Outstanding Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie.
Elliott married actress Katharine Ross in 1984, and they have one daughter, Cleo, a musician based in Malibu. The couple lives on a seaside ranch in Malibu and also maintains a property in Oregon.
Throughout his career, Elliott has been recognized for his distinctive deep voice, Western roles, and character work. He has received numerous honors, including an Academy Award nomination, two Golden Globe nominations, two Primetime Emmy nominations, a Critics’ Choice Television Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
