Sachin Tendulkar
Biography:
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, a former captain of the Indian national cricket team, was born on April 24, 1973. Tendulkar, dubbed the “God of Cricket,” is regarded by many as one of the greatest cricket players in history. He is the greatest run scorer in international cricket history, the only batsman to reach 100 international hundreds, and the player who has won the most player of the match awards. The president nominated Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha from 2012 to 2018.
Tendulkar began playing cricket at the age of eleven. At sixteen, he made his Test match debut against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989. For more than 24 years, he represented Mumbai both domestically and internationally. Halfway through his career in 2002, Wisden named him as the second-greatest ODI batsman of all time, behind Viv Richards, and the second-greatest Test batsman of all time, behind Don Bradman. Tendulkar was a member of the team that shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy that year. Tendulkar’s first victory in six World Cup appearances came later in his career when he was a member of the Indian squad that won the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
He had previously won the 2003 World Cup’s “Player of the Tournament” award. The Indian government has given Tendulkar multiple honors, including the Padma Shri (1998), the Arjuna Award (1994), the Khel Ratna Award (1997), and the Padma Vibhushan (2008). The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that Tendulkar would receive India’s highest civilian accolade, the Bharat Ratna, following his final match in November 2013. As of 2024, he is the youngest recipient of the award and the first athlete to do so. After playing his 200th Test match in November 2013, he withdrew from all forms of cricket after retiring from ODI cricket in 2012.
Tendulkar scored 34,357 runs while playing in 664 international cricket matches. Tendulkar was one of just two post-World War II specialist batsmen, along with Viv Richards, to be named in an all-time Test World XI in 2013 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack.
Tendulkar’s accomplishments have made him a symbol of Indian pride. Tendulkar was listed on Time’s yearly list of the world’s most important individuals in 2010. At the 2010 International Cricket Council (ICC) Awards, Tendulkar received the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for cricketer of the year. He was admitted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2019.
Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was born into a Marathi family in the Nirmal Nursing Home in Bombay’s Dadar neighborhood. His mother, Rajni, was employed in the insurance sector, while his father, Ramesh Tendulkar, was a poet and novelist in Marathi. Tendulkar’s father gave him the name Sachin Dev Burman in honor of his favorite music director. Tendulkar has three elder siblings: Savita, a half-sister, and Nitin and Ajit, two half-brothers. They were the offspring of his father’s first wife, who passed away following the birth of her third kid. Ajit, his brother, participated in the Kanga Cricket League in Bombay.
Tendulkar was raised in Bandra (East) at the Sahitya Sahawas Cooperative Housing Society. Tendulkar was regarded as a bully when he was younger and frequently started arguments with new students at his school. Tendulkar had an interest in cricket and tennis when he was younger. At the age of seven or eight, he grew his hair long in imitation of his hero, American athlete John McEnroe. As a symbol of his passion for tennis, Tendulkar also frequently donned tennis headbands and wristbands and carried a tennis racquet.
In 1984, Tendulkar’s older brother Ajit introduced him to cricket in an effort to tame his aggressive tendencies. At Shivaji Park in Dadar, Ajit introduced him to Ramakant Achrekar, a cricket coach. Tendulkar did not do well when they first met. Ajit told Achrekar that he wasn’t playing his natural game because he felt self-conscious about the coach watching him. Ajit asked the coach to give him another opportunity to play while hiding behind a tree. Apparently going unnoticed, Tendulkar performed far better this time and was admitted to Achrekar’s academy.
