Sennalkudi Narayana Lakshmi, an Indian actress born in 1927, was renowned for her roles in supporting characters, frequently portraying mothers or grandmothers in films. She earned accolades like the Kalaimamani and Kalaiselvam awards from the state government. Lakshmi’s illustrious career spanned over 1,500 films and 6,000 dramas.
Born into a family with limited resources, Lakshmi, the thirteenth child, left home at the age of 11 due to a lack of attention from her six older brothers. After her family’s relocation from Sennalkudi to Virudhunagar following her father’s death, Lakshmi’s journey into the entertainment world began when a neighbor, a dancer, helped her join a drama troupe. She honed her acting skills while traveling with the troupe and eventually found her way to Gemini Studios in Madras, where she was welcomed despite her destitute circumstances. It took eight years for her family to locate her.
Before her film career, Lakshmi gained extensive experience in theater, participating in more than 2,000 plays. She trained under theater stalwarts, including N. S. Krishnan and K. Balachander. She even performed daring stunts, acrobatics, and once even fought a leopard as an extra in an MGR film. Her career took off when N. S. Krishnan gave her a significant role in “Nalla Thangai,” followed by pivotal roles in “Thamarai Kulam” and “Engal Kula Devi.” She became a familiar face in Kamal Haasan’s productions, starting with “Thevar Magan.”
Throughout her life, Lakshmi remained unmarried, choosing to focus on her career and her extended family. She became a beloved figure in the film industry and was known for her charity work, frequently visiting a free medical center and assisting the staff. Sadly, she passed away in Chennai on 20 February 2012, at the age of 85, due to a cardiac arrest. Her body was cremated in her hometown of Virudhunagar, and her contributions to Indian cinema continue to be remembered and celebrated.
