American film, television, and television producer, writer, and director Robert Gerard Taper was born on May 14, 1955. His most well-known contribution to television is his co-creation of Xena: Warrior Princess.
Tapert’s interest in filmmaking began while he was a student of economics at Michigan State University. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell, Tapert’s longtime filmmaking colleagues, were introduced to him by his roommate and friend Ivan Raimi. The Evil Dead, a graphic horror film that Tapert produced, Sam Raimi directed, and Bruce Campbell acted in, was their first full-length motion picture. Before that, they experimented with a number of short films.
The picture was well received by the audience at the Cannes picture Festival in France, and thanks to Stephen King’s excellent assessment, it was released in theaters in the USA and other countries.
It developed a cult following and was later recognized as a horror classic by critics, despite not being their favorite at the time. Tapert has been involved as a producer in all five of the films and television shows that the movie inspired.
