Rishi Kapoor, a celebrated Indian actor, director, and producer, made significant contributions to Hindi cinema over a prolific 50-year career, earning numerous accolades including a National Film Award and four Filmfare Awards.
Born on September 4, 1952, into the illustrious Kapoor family, he was the second son of legendary actor-director Raj Kapoor and Krishna Raj Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor debuted as a young actor in his father’s film Mera Naam Joker, winning the National Film Award for Best Child Artist. His first adult lead role came opposite Dimple Kapadia in the teen romance Bobby, which garnered him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
From 1973 to 2000, Kapoor starred in 92 films as a romantic lead, featuring in major hits like Rafoo Chakkar, Kabhi Kabhie, Laila Majnu, Amar Akbar Anthony, Hum Kisise Kum Nahin, Sargam, Naseeb, Kaatilon Ke Kaatil, Prem Rog, Coolie, Nagina, Chandni, Henna, Deewana, Bol Radha Bol, and Damini. He also received acclaim for his roles in Khel Khel Mein, Karz, Yeh Vaada Raha, Saagar, Tawaif, Naseeb Apna Apna, Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani, and Hathyar.
In the 2000s, Kapoor transitioned to character roles, earning critical praise for performances in Hum Tum, Fanaa, Namastey London, Love Aaj Kal, Agneepath, Housefull 2, Aurangzeb, Shuddh Desi Romance, 102 Not Out, and Mulk. His role in Do Dooni Chaar won him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Critics), and his performance in Kapoor & Sons earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. His final film, Sharmaji Namkeen, was released posthumously.
Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh in 1980, and they had two children, actor Ranbir Kapoor and daughter Riddhima Kapoor. Diagnosed with leukemia in 2018, he underwent treatment in New York City. He passed away on April 30, 2020, at the age of 67.
