TheatreStudent of the Year is an Indian teen film directed by Karan Johar and produced by Dharma Productions and Red Chillies Entertainment. The film marks the debut of Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, with supporting performances by Rishi Kapoor, Sana Saeed, Ronit Roy, Sahil Anand, Ram Kapoor, and Farida Jalal.
The plot follows Rohan Nanda, a spoiled high school student, and his girlfriend Shonaya Singhania. Abhimanyu Singh, a middle-class student, aims to prove himself through hard work. Rohan and Abhimanyu become rivals, competing in various aspects of college life. Their dean, Yoginder Vashisht, announces the “Student of the Year” competition, offering the winner a chance to study at an Ivy League institution.
Released on October 19, 2012, the film was a commercial success in India. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances and music but critiqued the story and screenplay. A standalone sequel, “Student of the Year 2,” directed by Punit Malhotra, was released on May 10, 2019.
