George Raymond Stevenson (25 May 1964 – 21 May 2023) was a Northern Irish actor acclaimed for his work in both film and television. He gained widespread recognition as Titus Pullo in the BBC/HBO drama Rome (2005–2007), and for his portrayals of two Marvel characters: Frank Castle / The Punisher in Punisher: War Zone (2008) and The Super Hero Squad Show, and Volstagg in the Thor films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (2011–2017).
His film credits include Dagonet in King Arthur (2004), mobster Danny Greene in Kill the Irishman (2011), Porthos in The Three Musketeers (2011), and Governor-General Scott Buxton in the Indian blockbuster RRR (2022). On television, he played Isaak Sirko in Dexter (2012), earning a Saturn Award nomination, Edward Teach (Blackbeard) in Black Sails (2016–2017), Gar Saxon in Star Wars Rebels (2016–2017) and The Clone Wars (2020), Othere in Vikings (2020), and Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka (2023).
Born in Lisburn, County Antrim, Stevenson was the second of three sons. His father, a Royal Air Force pilot, was British, and his mother was Irish. The family relocated to England when he was eight, living in Newcastle upon Tyne and Seaton Delaval. After completing a design course in Newcastle, he studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, graduating at 29.
Stevenson made his film debut in The Theory of Flight (1998) and went on to star in the World War I short film No Man’s Land (2002). He played Dagonet in King Arthur (2004) and later landed his first leading film role in Outpost (2008), followed by Punisher: War Zone the same year. He appeared in The Other Guys (2010) as an antagonist, and in 2011 took on roles as mob boss Danny Greene (Kill the Irishman), Volstagg (Thor), and Porthos (The Three Musketeers). His later filmography includes G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), Big Game, Divergent (2014) and its sequels Insurgent (2015) and Allegiant (2016). In 2019, he was cast in the Telugu epic RRR, marking his debut in Indian cinema.
On television, Stevenson had early roles in The Dwelling Place (1994), The Tide of Life (1996), Some Kind of Life (1995), and The Return of the Native. Alongside Rome, he also appeared in Waking the Dead, Murphy’s Law, City Central, and At Home with the Braithwaites. In 2012, he voiced the Punisher in The Super Hero Squad Show and starred as Isaak Sirko in Dexter. He later joined Black Sails (2015–2017), Vikings (2013–2020), and Das Boot (2022).
In 2023, he was cast as Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka. His performance was praised by critics and fans alike, with many describing it as one of the highlights of the series. Showrunner Dave Filoni noted Stevenson’s nuanced approach, and the character quickly became a fan favorite. Following Stevenson’s death, the role was recast with Rory McCann, a close friend of his.
Stevenson married English actress Ruth Gemmell in 1997; the couple divorced in 2005. He later married Italian anthropologist Elisabetta Caraccia, with whom he had three sons.
On 21 May 2023, Stevenson passed away at the age of 58 while working on the film Cassino in Ischia in Italy. His cause of death has not been publicly confirmed. The first episode of Ahsoka, released in August 2023, included a tribute to him, reading: “For our friend, Ray.” His role in Cassino in Ischia was taken over by Dominic Purcell, and his final completed film, Canary Black (2024), was dedicated to his memory.
