Pratap Pothen, born on August 13, 1952, and sadly passing away on July 15, 2022, was a prominent Indian actor and filmmaker. He had a prolific career that included acting in approximately 100 films and directing 12 films across various Indian film industries, such as Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Additionally, he also ventured into scriptwriting and film production.
Born in Trivandrum, Kerala, on August 13, 1952, Pratap Pothen’s father, Kolathinkal Pothan, was a businessman who passed away when Pratap was just 15 years old. He grew up with five siblings, including an elder brother named Hari Pothan, who was also involved in film production.
Pratap’s education took him to the Lawrence School in Lovedale, Ooty. Initially, he had a keen interest in painting, but during his college years, he discovered a passion for acting through involvement in theater productions with friends, eventually prioritizing acting over painting.
After graduating from Madras Christian College, Pratap worked as a copywriter at an advertising agency in Mumbai. Later, he also had stints at Sistas ad agency and Hindustan Thomson.
In his personal life, Pratap Pothen married actress Raadhika in 1985; however, their marriage was short-lived, and they separated in 1986. In 1990, he entered into a marriage with Amala Sathyanath, with whom he had a daughter named Keya.
