Pradeep Ranganathan

Pradeep Ranganathan, an Indian filmmaker and actor based in Chennai, has made notable strides in Tamil cinema, earning recognition for his directorial ventures and forays into acting. His journey into the industry began with the creation of various short films, such as “Whatsapp Kadhal” in 2015, where he displayed his versatility by taking on multiple roles—acting, editing, and directing.

Ranganathan’s breakthrough came when Jayam Ravi and Vels International were impressed by his short film portfolio, paving the way for his feature film directorial debut with “Comali” in 2019. Starring Jayam Ravi and Kajal Aggarwal, the film emerged as a commercial success. However, it faced controversy due to a segment in the trailer referencing Rajinikanth’s political aspirations in 1996, which led to demands for a boycott. The contentious scene was subsequently removed from the film.

Inspired by the American science fiction classic “Back to the Future” (1985), Ranganathan often draws motivation from this film when conceptualizing his own projects. Additionally, he acknowledges inspiration from acclaimed Hindi filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani, particularly citing “Munna Bhai MBBS” (2003) and “3 Idiots” (2009) as influential works in shaping his approach to storytelling.

His sophomore directorial venture, “Love Today” (2022), based on his short film “App(a) Lock,” marked a significant milestone. Despite its modest budget, the film garnered immense success upon release, surpassing expectations and becoming a blockbuster hit in Tamil Nadu. Ranganathan not only directed the film but also made his debut as the male lead, showcasing his versatility both behind and in front of the camera.

In an intriguing revelation, Ranganathan shared that “Love Today” holds personal significance, reflecting some aspects of his past and serving as a heartfelt dedication to his ex-girlfriend rather than a tale of vengeance.
