José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal is an American and Chilean actor who was born on April 2, 1975. His Spanish name is [xoˈse ˈpeðʾo βalmaˈseða pasˈkal]. Pascal had his breakthrough performance as Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones (2014), following over twenty years of playing supporting parts on stage and television. His role as Javier Peña in the Netflix crime series Narcos (2015–2017) helped him become even more well-known. He later starred in the movies Triple Frontier (2019), The Equalizer 2 (2018), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), and The Great Wall (2016).
Pascal gained international fame and a reputation for playing adoptive parent figures thanks to his prominent appearances as Joel Miller in the HBO post-apocalyptic drama series The Last of Us (2023–present) and Din Djarin in the Disney+ science fiction series The Mandalorian (2019–2023). He won multiple awards for the latter part, including two Primetime Emmys, a Golden Globe nomination, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In the films We Can Be Heroes (2020), Strange Way of Life (2023), The Wild Robot (2024), and The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), he also played parental roles. Pascal also starred in Gladiator II (2024) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020).
