American filmmaker Nia DaCosta was born on November 8, 1989. She became well-known after she won the Tribeca Film Festival’s Nora Ephron Prize for Female Filmmakers in the murder thriller Little Woods (2018), which marked her feature-length writing and directing debut.
After working on various projects, most notably directing two episodes of the British thriller series Top Boy in 2019, DaCosta made history as the first black female filmmaker to open the horror movie Candyman (2021) at the top of the U.S. box office. The Marvels (2023), which was a box office failure but became the highest-grossing picture directed by a Black woman, made her the first Black woman to helm a Marvel Comics movie.
