Newton Thomas Sigel

Biography:

American cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel (born August 29, 1955), ASC, is well recognized for his work with filmmaker Bryan Singer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Sigel studied painting in New York City before joining the Whitney Museum of American Art as an artist-in-residence. He started off as a camera operator for experimental director Kenneth Anger.

After turning to documentary filmmaking, he produced several films, such as El Salvador: Another Vietnam, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. DP Haskell Wexler was drawn to his photography, and the two worked together for several years to create Latino, his first feature picture as director of photography, which came out in 1985. During the 1980s, Sigel worked primarily on television movies and as a second unit DP. He frequently worked with Robert Richardson on movies like The Doors and Platoon. Beginning with The Usual Suspects in 1995, Sigel worked as director Bryan Singer’s regular cinematographer until 2018.
