Nammalvar Lingusamy, born on 14 November 1967, is a prominent Indian film director, screenwriter, and film producer in Tamil cinema, headquartered in Chennai. His directorial journey began with the debut film “Aanandham” in 2001, followed by successful ventures like “Run” (2002), “Sandakozhi” (2005), “Paiyaa” (2010), and “Vettai” (2012). Lingusamy, along with his brother N. Subash Chandrabose, has also ventured into film production through his company, Thirupathi Brothers.
Born and raised in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, Lingusamy initially worked as an assistant to A. Venkatesh and Vikraman. His debut directorial, “Aanandham,” was inspired by real-life incidents from his large family, leaving a promising mark in 2001. The film garnered critical acclaim and various awards, setting the stage for Lingusamy’s impactful career.
“Run,” his second film with Madhavan, became a commercial success, and Lingusamy continued to explore various genres. He achieved triumph with films like “Sandakozhi,” featuring Vishal, and faced challenges with projects like “Ji,” which received mixed reviews. Lingusamy showcased his versatility with a successful foray into road movies with “Paiyaa,” featuring Karthi and Tamannaah.
In 2012, Lingusamy directed the action masala film “Vettai,” starring Arya and Madhavan. His contributions extend beyond Tamil cinema, with dubbed Telugu versions of his films finding success in Andhra Pradesh. Lingusamy’s films have also been remade in other languages, exemplified by the Hindi remake of “Run.”
Despite his successes, Lingusamy encountered challenges with films like “Anjaan” in 2014, which faced criticism for lacking substance. Undeterred, he continued his directorial journey with “Sandakozhi 2” (2018) and the bilingual Telugu-Tamil movie “The Warriorr” (2022), showcasing his resilience and commitment to filmmaking.
