Mukta Barve is a renowned Indian actress and producer known for her work in film, television, and theatre, primarily within the Marathi entertainment industry. Recognized as one of the most prominent Marathi celebrities, she has received seven Maharashtra State Film Awards, including one for Best Debut and six for Best Actress across various plays and films.
Barve began her career in Marathi television in 1998 with the show Ghadlay Bighadlay. She made her theatrical debut in 2001 with the play Aamhala Vegle Vhayache and entered Marathi cinema in 2002 with the film Chakwa. Her performances in films such as Thang (2006), Maati Maay (2007), Sawar Re (2007), Saas Bahu Aur Sensex (2008), Sumbaran (2009), and Ek Daav Dhobi Pachhad (2009) were highly praised.
The 2009 film Jogwa marked a significant turning point in her career, leading to a series of successful films like Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai (2010), Aaghaat (2009), Badam Rani Gulam Chor (2012), Lagna Pahave Karun (2013), Mangalashtak Once More (2013), Double Seat (2015), and Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai 2 (2015).
On television, her roles in Agnihotra (2009–2010) and Eka Lagnachi Dusri Goshta (2012) were particularly notable. In theatre, she gained acclaim for her performances in plays like Final Draft (2005), Dehbhaan (2005), Kabaddi Kabaddi (2008), and Chhapa Kata (2013). In 2015, she starred in three successful films: Highway, Double Seat, and Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai 2. She continued her film career with notable appearances in YZ and Ganvesh in 2016.
In addition to acting, Barve owns Rasika Productions, under which she has produced plays such as Chhapa Kata, Lovebirds (2015), and Indira (2015). She also created a theatre-based poetry program, Rang Nava, showcasing both her poetry and that of others. Currently, she is involved in acting and producing the play CodeMantra (2016) under her production house.
Mukta Barve was born on 17 may 1979 in Chinchwad near Pune, Maharashtra. Her father worked for a telecom company, and her mother was a school teacher. She has a brother, Debu Barve, a commercial artist. Barve participated in numerous school plays and decided to pursue acting professionally after completing her 10th grade.
She attended Sir Parshurambhau College in Pune for her 11th and 12th grades and graduated from Savitribai Phule Pune University with a degree in Theatre, earning a bachelor’s degree in Drama from Lalit Kala Kendra. Despite being socially awkward and having few friends as a child, Barve moved to Mumbai to fully dedicate herself to her acting career, initially staying in a girls’ hostel in Kurla.
