Matthew Charles Berry (born May 2, 1974) is an English actor, comedian, musician, and writer, known for his roles in comedy television shows such as The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh, Snuff Box, What We Do in the Shadows, Krapopolis, and Toast of London, the latter of which he co-created. His work on Toast of London earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme in 2015. As a musician, Berry has released eleven studio albums.
Born in Bromham, Bedfordshire, to nurse Pauline and taxi driver Charles Berry, Berry attended Nottingham Trent University, graduating in 1999 with a degree in contemporary arts. Between 1998 and 1999, he appeared on the video game magazine show Game Over on BSkyB’s .tv channel.
Berry’s breakthrough TV role came in 2004 as Todd Rivers/Lucien Sanchez in the cult comedy series Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, and its spin-off Man to Man with Dean Learner in 2006. He also starred as the eccentric tycoon Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh after meeting the show’s creators while performing at the Hen and Chickens Theatre. He went on to co-create Snuff Box with Rich Fulcher, which aired on BBC Three.
In 2007, Berry joined The IT Crowd in its second series as Douglas Reynholm, a role for which he received a nomination at the British Comedy Awards. He also appeared in a variety of other shows including Shooting Stars and Monkey Trousers.
Throughout his career, Berry starred in several films, including The Devil’s Chair (2006) and Moon (2009), and also featured in One Day (2011). He played Steven Toast in Toast of London, a show that won him the 2015 BAFTA Award. In addition to acting, Berry contributed music for Snuff Box, Toast of London, and other projects. He has also toured with various bands and released numerous albums.
Berry has voiced characters in animation, including Bubbles in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) and the Butt Witch in Twelve Forever (2015). He has provided narration for TV and radio advertising campaigns and appeared in numerous sketch shows. His voice work extends to the role of Prince Merkimer in Disenchantment (2018), and he has voiced several characters in The Book of Boba Fett (2021).
His music career spans across eleven albums, with his latest release, Heard Noises, coming out in January 2025. He has been featured in various music videos and live performances, including the Super Furry Animals’ Run-Away video in 2007.
