Mahathi S, known by the mononym Mahathi, is a highly accomplished Carnatic musician and versatile playback singer renowned for her contributions to film songs in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages.
Born into a family deeply rooted in musical traditions, Mahathi inherited her passion for music from her father, Thiruvaiyaru P. Sekar, a vocalist and disciple of Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna, and her mother, Smt. Vasanthi Sekar, a flautist and grand disciple of prominent musicians such as Sri. T. R. Mahalingam, Sri. N. Ramani, and Smt. Kesi. Additionally, Mahathi is the great-granddaughter of the esteemed violinist Sangeetha Kalanidhi Pazhamaneri Swaminatha Iyer.
Mahathi’s musical journey began with initial training from her parents and Deepa Gayatri of Trivandrum. Subsequently, under the guidance of Sri. Mangad. K. Natesan in Trichur and advanced training from Padma Bhushan awardee Madurai Shri. T. N. Seshagopalan, Mahathi honed her skills as a Carnatic musician. Her dedication to the art earned her the Central Govt Scholarship for Carnatic Music in 1994.
In 2003, Mahathi marked her entry into the world of playback singing with the duet “Iyyaiyyo Pudichirukku” alongside Hariharan, composed by Harris Jayaraj for the movie “Saamy.” Her distinctive voice and musical prowess quickly gained recognition, paving the way for a successful career in playback singing.
