Mahalakshmi Iyer’s musical journey spans across various Indian languages and genres, establishing her as a prominent playback singer in the Indian music industry. She made her foray into playback singing with the film “Dus” in 1997, although the movie was never released due to the director’s untimely passing. However, the album was later released in 1999 as a tribute.
Her actual playback debut came with the song “Ae Ajnabee” alongside Udit Narayan for A.R. Rahman in Mani Ratnam’s “Dil Se..” This song marked the beginning of her prolific career as a playback singer. She continued to lend her voice to various compositions by renowned music directors like Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, Vishal–Shekhar, Nadeem–Shravan, and Jatin–Lalit in hit movies such as “Mission Kashmir,” “Yaadein,” and “Saathiya.”
Mahalakshmi’s vocal prowess and versatility shine through her performances in notable songs like “Kabhi Sham Dhale” from “Sur – The Melody of Life” (2002), “Har Taraf” from “Rishtey” (2002), “Chup Chup Ke” from “Bunty Aur Babli” (2005), “Aaj Ki Raat” from “Don: The Chase Begins Again” (2006), and “Bol Na Halke Halke” from “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.”
